Has League hit its prime? Smurfs / Dynamic Queue And My Own Thoughts on Holy Trinity

August 11th, 2016 No comments

I personally think League of Legends is still doing strong. However, thought provoking videos like this get my attention when they discuss strong points. It also covers how the “support” role is so rare that it causes the queue in high ranked games to really drag on (because no one wants to play support)

I really do wish we could get some distance from the “Holy Trinity” meta that appears in most team based games where you need a Tank / DPS / Healer. I am a bit interested in seeing some experimentation in a different sort of meta whereas we do not see “support” roles thrust upon us in team based moba-likes/MOBA games. One approach is sort of let players create their own “classes” where they are more self-reliant. Another approach that shooters such as CoD/Mass Effect 3 MP employs is that players can regenerate their health or shields when they are no longer in combat. Rainbow Six Siege is interesting since support role only “revives” a fallen player (Doc). They are not heal bots. Siege is a ton of fun too!

In real life, one unfortunately cannot get instantly healed within a few seconds. I think this is why Rainbow Six / Counterstrike has the edge in this aspect because they totally eliminated the ability to heal altogether. So perhaps more thought could be given on a fun alternative method besides forcing players into a support role. This role just tends to not be very popular no matter how engaging designers attempt to make the role. I never played Strife (MOBA game, niche crowd) but they appear to support letting players heal outside of combat. Unfortunately, Strife released after League of Legends and got swept up in the Dota 2 release. But this title deserves an honorable mention for trying to navigate around the support structure.

Now don’t get me wrong- playing support role can be fun! But most of us may enjoy being a DPS role a lot more the majority of the time. If we could get away from heal bots in some moba-likes that might be interesting and could help queue times. Granted, many team games (like Overwatch) just tosses everyone into a lobby. This navigates around queue times being delayed but unfortunately now players have to argue over who plays support. A lot of times it works out but other times it may not.

New Digital Card Games

August 5th, 2016 No comments

More digital card games announced/released:
Elder Scrolls Legends
Eternal

As far as I can tell, they are all free-to-play exactly like Hearthstone and you have to open packs to randomly acquire cards. I’d imagine they both include crafting systems as well. I’m personally sticking with Hearthstone but I do rather like Duelyst’s mix of Hearthstone / Tactics

Lots of Digital TCGs

July 10th, 2016 No comments

Figured I would look up all the digital TCG games I’ve seen mentioned on various forums (besides Hearthstone which is what I’m currently playing). I have come across this list (all of them are free to play):
SolForge (created by Richard Garfield)
Star Crusade
Duelyst
Scrolls
Infinity Wars
Hex
Spellweaver

Orcs Must Die Unchained (Open Beta)

April 3rd, 2016 No comments

Orcs Must Die now has taken a look at MOBA games and have evolved the core gameplay to include 5 vs 5. Just been playing Siege coop with other players. Game is free to play so it is easy to hop in and play. Heroes feel pretty fresh and a good fit for their game mode. So far, my only criticism is I believe it could take quite awhile to grind the crafting mats to unlock a new hero. It’s unfortunate that all the heroes are not included.

Anyway the gameplay seems fun and addictive. Hopefully this game gets the attention it deserves.

Below seemed like a pretty good video that discusses it:

So… Epic Games’ Paragon Card System…

March 9th, 2016 No comments

I am looking forward to this game lifting NDA on Mar 14th and Founder’s pack going for sale. They also stated that heroes will be free. However, there appears to be a catch. Paragon includes a Card system. Those of us that have played a lot of other mobas may have some alarm bells going off because this sounds a lot like:

  • Players will have to grind out Cards to be competitive
  • New players or casual players that do not grind out the Cards wont be as competitive

I really love how gorgeous this game looks but I fear a lot of the Dota 2 / Smite players may stay put unless Epic Games clarifies that the Card system will not impact competitive play. Those that might not be familiar with Dota 2 – the only money the player has to spend is on vanity items 100%. You do not have to spend time grinding runes, items, cards, etc. It is 100% all about the player skill. Smite is also in the same boat sort of- once you purchase the God pack for $20-30, you have all of the Gods. No need to grind for anything to be competitive. There are no cards, items, runes, etc.

I am personally sort of on the fence with Paragon and will wait and see what players think of the card system. But still this is very exciting to see MOBAs find their way to consoles. I wish Epic Games good luck with Paragon. I look forward to trying it out sometime :)

Vainglory looks like an interesting Mobile MOBA game. Watched a twitch feed for it. Features 3 vs 3 traditional lane fighting for iOs and android. Kind of interested in how the controls function for a MOBA on a touch screen

Destiny Adds the ability to alter inventory from a phone app

March 1st, 2015 No comments

This is huge. I’ve been playing the fantastic Dragonball Xenoverse lately (must buy for dragonball fans btw) but just logged in to test this feature. Works great!

I’ve never seen an online rpg do this before. From your smart phone, you can easily swap items on your character while you’re in a mission, etc. This is even easier than Town portals in Diablo! I am going to give Bungie props for this one. Well done!

Happy New Year…

December 29th, 2013 No comments

Unity store has just updated with a build of UMA! Remember I just blogged on that earlier (assuming anyone cares).

Been playing a bit of Killzone 4 ShadowFall and Resogun over the break. Starting to get better at both!

Btw, I just knew this artwork was the character WAR from Darksiders but apparently it’s a different concept.
